DESCRIPTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL WORK GROUP"Architecture and Renewable Energy Sources" (ARES) The form of our future built environment must be based on a responsible approach to nature and the use of the inexhaustible energy potential of the sun, wind, earth and water which consist the four basic elements of the Renewable Energy Sources as well as of the Aristotle's theory. The role of architecture as a responsible profession is of far - reaching significance in this respect. The aim of the Architect's work in the future must, therefore, be to design buildings and urban spaces in such a way that natural resources will be conserved and renewable forms of energy - especially solar, wind, earth and water energy - will be used as extensively as possible, thus avoiding many of undersirable developments. New design concepts must be developed that will increase awareness of these basic elements, as sources of light and heat; for an acceptance of the renewable energy technology in construction by the general public can only be achieved by means of convincing visual ideas and examples. The natural resources available in a given location, especially sun and wind should be harnessed for the climatic conditioning of buildings and should be reflected in the design of their layout and form. The form of the urban and landscape structures that man creates must therefore be governed by the following environmental and bioclimatic factors leading to an Architecture influenced by the use of Renewable Energy Source: Orientation of streets and building structures to the sun; Temperature control and use of daylight in the public realm; Topography (land form, overall exposure, general situation); Direction and intensity of wind (alignment of streets, sheltered public spaces, systematic ventilation, cold-air corridors); The training and further education of architects and engineers must be related to future needs and should take place within mutually related systems on various levels, using the facilities afforded by the new media. Schools, universities, and professional associations are called upon to develop relevant options. The four major issues of the WP are: Incorporation of ARES in an urban building environment Methodology - Applied Experience Educational & Informational procedures for Architects & Engineers Understanding & decoding ARES New technologies Systems, building materials - Examples - Options ARES & Legislative Frame Incorporation of new technologies in an integrated international legislative frame For all the above reasons, the U.I.A., which is the most recognized international organization of Architects, will play a leader role towards an "Architecture implementing Renewable Energy Sources" and a significant step to this point will be the forming of the new international Work Group. The UIA International Workgroup "ARES" is activated on the subject -Architecture & Renewable Sources. Greece is the Host country through UIA Greek Section - Technical Chamber of Greece. Mr Nikos Fintikakis, Architect, deputy member of UIA Council, is directing the international WP, assisted by the architect Mr Kyriakos Pipinis, member of UIA Greek Section.
